Paso Robles…A Highway Runs Through It!

Posted on October 26, 2012 by admin Posted in Uncategorized .
Two Different Sides of the Road…Like Night & Day!

Paso Robleshas become one of my favorite wine destinations. And why not, it’s like going to two different wine regions right next to each other…and they both have great wine! You see Paso Robles has a highway that runs through the middle and that road divides the area into two totally different wine regions in both look and feel.

One side of the road is very flat with acres and acres of vineyards. This is the home of some of the region’s largest wine producers. And believe me it is very impressive to drive through vineyard after vineyard!

The other side of the road immediately starts up the side of a small mountain. The wineries on this side are boutique wineries where the vineyards grow on the side of mountains, hills and along curved tree lined roads.

The two distinct areas and types of wineries easily makes Paso Robles a great wine trip, which helps explain why it has quickly become one of California’s hottest and fastest emerging wine regions. But make no mistake, Paso has some great wines and deserves its growing reputation.

On our last visit we stayed at the Firestone winery on the flat side of the road. (Its now Eos Estate, but it still has a great tasting room and some really nice wine!) Each evening we sat on their patio, drinking wine while grilling dinner! What a great way to end a day!!

One of our favorite stops in Paso is Penman Springs. Located in a small farm house its charm is heightened by the wonderful personality of its owner Beth McCasland! Adding to the wine experience are dips, breads and cheeses. This is a must stop on any trip to Paso!

Pear Valley is one of my favorite on the flat side of Paso. Its a modern winery with some really nice wine. On the Mountain side of Paso I really like the charm of all the wineries. But if I must pick a favorite, it would be Doce Robles which is in a small quaint farm house.  Both have very nice wines complimented by friendly laid-back staffs.
In fact good wine and laid-back pretty much sums up all of Paso’s wineries!

Located about half way between LA and Oakland, Paso Robles is a little harder to get to than many California regions, but for a cool wine adventure you’ll love it!

Cheers!

Harold

The Magic Kingdom of Wine

Epcot & Wines Around The World!

It’s great fun to take young children to Disney World. Well almost always fun! It can at times be stressful for them and their parents. We took our kids several times, and seeing their faces light up is well worth the effort.

However getting a much needed adult beverage at Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom has been impossible unless you’re a member of Club 33. Which brings me to Epcot and Wines Around the World.

Several years ago Gwen, Joe, Gale and I went to the Wonderful world of fun!! And fun it was!! In fact we had more fun as adults than we ever did taking the kids!! I think we only had one melt down!

With Park Hopper Passes we went to a different park each day to ride the rides and see the attractions! And without kids you really do get to see more than you do herding cats…I mean kids! Each afternoon at five we went over to Epcot to have wine at the different countries…Wines Around The World!

The funny thing about Epcot, of the 11 countries represented only two do not have wine! One is Mexico which is unfortunate because they have some nice wine! The other is the US! That’s right the US only has beer! If you want American wine just go to Norway where you’ll find it! Now figure that one out.

We stayed just off the park and rode a Disney bus each day. Since our Kids knew about our Wines Around the World plan they were concerned we would never find our bus after our worldly wine hopping excursions. But being resourceful adults we made signs that asked people to take us to our bus parking spot if they found us wandering around lost! Hey you got to do what you got to do!

So if you really want to see Disney World, go in the spring or fall and leave the kids at home. I promise you’ll have a great time, especially if every afternoon you go to Epcot and experience Wines Around the World!

And if you must take the kids, you’ll need Wines Around the World!

Cheers!!!
Harold

The Great State Fair of Texas & Wine

Posted on October 6, 2012 by admin Posted in Uncategorized .

The State Fair Is On And Wine Can be Found All Over The Fairgrounds!
State Fair wine is mainly jug or box wine. A few places sell Texas Wine out of large bottles which costs more! I guess it costs more because it’s from Texas and in a bottle. Be careful the wine in a bottle sometimes comes in smaller cups.

From my point of view, stick with jug or box wine. Our friend Harry would be excited to know that the jug wine is Carlo Rossi. Harry would be right at home…maybe that explains why he worked at the Fair for so many years!

Some of the booths don’t sell wine; instead they sell wine coolers and wine margaritas. But for my part I’m sticking to wine in a box.  It’s the easiest to get, and you are at the Great State Fair of Texas…home of everything imaginable fried. So why not wine in a box to go with those fried delicacies!!  And my favorite place to get my wine in a box is at Hanns Mueller’s in front of the Cotton Bowl, where my two favorite pourers are Billy and Wanda!

You can also get Texas Wine by the glass or have a tasting or two at the Texas Wine Garden. Each day different wineries are there and the wine is often poured by the winery owner. This gives you the opportunity to try some Texas wine and ask questions without actually traveling to a winery. And while you are at the Wine Garden check out the Wine Country Bistro and its cheeses and fruit platters.

And for a final treat go by the “DMarie” booth in the Grand Place or “Mix It Up” in the Craft Pavilion. Both have mixes for making wine slushies that are great for our hot summers. The “DMarie” slushies have a more traditional wine taste while “Mix It Up” comes in frozen cocktail flavors. Both are great so pick the one you like.

But no matter what you do, remember our State Fair is a Great State Fair, don’t miss it, don’t even be late. And always have some wine with whatever fried food you try!

Cheers!!
